PSU's 'Walk to Fight Cancer' event nears

Article Date: Friday, September 5, 2008

The 9th Annual 'Walk to Fight Cancer' will be held Saturday, Sept. 20 at Plymouth State University's Physical Education Center. Registration is at 11 a.m., the walk begins at noon and ends at 10 p.m.

The 10-hour event, sponsored by PSU's Athletic Department, features volunteers walking a quarter-mile long course to raise money for individuals and families affected by cancer. The grassroots fundraiser is organized by the nonprofit group Keeping You, Me and Memories Alive, Inc., which last year raised more than $16,500 in its most successful walk ever. Organizers point to the event's local ties and goal of helping those in need, rather than passing the donated money to larger, out-of-town cancer research groups.

"We have a wonderful and caring community here, filled with individuals who love and support one another," said Diane Tiffany, board treasurer. "Last year, we assisted 55 local families and PSU students. We can count on each other for strength and support, and that truly makes the Plymouth area the special place we all call home."

More than $115,000 has been raised since the 'Walk to Fight Cancer' started eight years ago. Money has been distributed to individuals and families in Ashland, Alexandria, Bridgewater, Campton, Dorchester, Ellsworth, Groton, Hebron, Holderness, Lincoln, New Hampton, Plymouth, Rumney, Thornton, Warren, Waterville Valley, Wentworth and Woodstock.

Prior to the walk, participants collect donations from their sponsors and turn them in at the registration, which starts at 11 a.m. that day. Previous entrants include PSU athletic teams and student organizations, local youth groups and individuals from the University and surrounding towns.

"Our organization is comprised of local folks," said Kathryn Melanson, board secretary. "We have all lost a loved one to cancer and we have come together with that in common to help the community."

Non-walkers can also support the event by purchasing luminaries for $5 each, in memory of a loved one lost to cancer or to honor a cancer survivor. T-shirts are given to walkers who raise at least $50 and to volunteers at the event. Other activities include a dollar sale, live entertainment, food, Locks of Love, face painting, games and luminary sales. All proceeds benefit local families and PSU students.

Luminaries will be sold Saturday and Sept. 13 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in front of Anderson's Bakery and Sept. 15-19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the HUB Pawsway, and at the walk.
