PLYMOUTH - Twelve local runners and the New Hampshire Electric Co-op Foundation have teamed up to raise nearly $6,000 for the cancer support group Keeping You, Me & Memories Alive (KYMMA). Averaging nine minutes, five seconds per mile, the all-female "Sistas with Blistas" team completed the 210-mile New Balance Reach the Beach Relay in 31 hours and 42 minutes. The team raised a total of $2,960, which was matched by funds from the New Hampshire Electric Co-op Foundation for a grand total of $5,920.
The Plymouth-based KYMMA will use the funds to help individuals undergoing cancer treatment and their families in central New Hampshire.
More than 450 teams of runners competed in the Sept. 17-18 event, which starts at Cannon Mountain in Franconia Notch and finishes at Hampton Beach.
Team members ran through the day and night, and were supported by a small fleet of vehicles and volunteers.
The "Sistas with Blistas" finished first in their category, Women's Super Masters for women over 40. Competing in the race were team members Jackie Downing, Christine Louis, Jill Miller and Julie Bisson of Plymouth; Penny Huynen, Julie Fogarty, Meredith Houseman, Jen Morris and Tobi Pfenninger of Holderness; Audrey Simpson of Bridgewater; Sue Sampson of New Hampton; and Kim Henry of Hill.
